5 Easy steps to improve your chances of being seen on page 1 of Google.
What do the letters SEO mean to you as a small business owner? Do you even care or should you even care? The answer is “YES” but only if you want greater exposure and higher Google rankings for your business.
WHAT IS SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. This is the skill used to increase your search engine ranking. To give you an example of what I mean I have typed in “Pest Control” in the Google search bar.
The first 4 results that are shown have the names of the businesses that have paid for their position. This is shown by Google placing an “Ad” next their name (not a bad way to go if you have the money).
After these “Ad’s” you have the businesses that have used SEO (search engine optimisation) to secure their position.
Now you may be asking “Does it really matter if I am on page 1 compared to 2, 3 or 4?”

If you are not an IT specialist or a social media marketer chances are you have seen the word SEO but don’t really understand how it can help you or your business. Being on page 1 of Google, guarantees that your business will be seen if a potential customer searches for your keyword. Research, from Leverage Marketing, shows that websites on the first page of any search engine receive 95% of web traffic. This is massive and shows the importance of securing that page 1 position.
IS FACEBOOK IMPORTANT FOR SEO?
There are many strategies a business can use to improve their search engine rankings and optimising Facebook is one of them. In fact, many people underestimate the importance of Facebook in their SEO strategy and here is why:
- Facebook creates links through social shares
- Facebook has the ability to drive traffic to your website
- Facebook can attract a relevant and engaging audience
- Facebook improves visibility using keyword optimisation
These are all things that are vital to improving your SEO and like it or not Facebook has a lot of power in the social marketing for business.

Now that you understand the importance of SEO and how it can improve your search engine ranking I am going to show you how to SEO Facebook for your business so you can improve your search engine rankings.
STEP 1- Customize Your URL
When you create a Facebook page for your business, Facebook automatically generates a URL for you. This is usually long and hard to remember.
After your business receives 25 likes you are able to claim your own unique Facebook URL.
Matching your Facebook URL with your business name promotes brand recognition. This makes it easier for people to remember your name. Just remember once you have chosen and claimed your unique URL it cannot be changed. So choose wisely.
STEP2- Fully Complete your “ABOUT” Section
It sounds easy enough but you would be surprised at how many businesses have one sentence to explain everything they do. This is where people go to find out about you and your business. This can help you sound authoritive, professional and trustworthy, all qualities people are looking for when buying or connecting with a business. This is also the part you need to optimise with relevant keywords so your target market can easily find you.
If you’re not sure how to do this here are some tips that may help:
- Research keywords relevant to your business
- Choose 1-2 keywords that have high traffic.
- Write an informative description using those keywords often but don’t go overboard. Make it sound as natural and non repetitive as possible.
STEP 3 – Reinforce Your Branding with a Cover Photo and Profile Picture
Your Cover photo is the first thing people see when they click on your page. Your image needs to represent what your business is about. A great example of this is from Sugar Treat a home baking business.
There is no mistaking what they do as the cover photo showcases some of their best masterpieces. It is also a great place to promote any specials, discounts or events that your business may have. For even more impact businesses are now able to display a video as their cover photo. This is a little more advanced but is worth every penny.
Another tip here is that people are able to click on your Cover photo and profile picture. You have the ability to include a Call to action here and direct them to your website. Take advantage of this as you would be surprised at how many people click on photos.
STEP 4 – Include a Relevant Call to Action (CTA)
Each Facebook business page is equipped with a Call to Action button but did you know that you can choose the action you want people to take? The most common is CALL NOW but some others that may interest you are: Book Now, Contact Us, Send Message, Use App, Play Game, Shop Now, Sign Up, Watch Video, Send Email, Learn More, and Request Appointment. Whatever you choose make sure it aligns with what your cover is promoting.
STEP 5 – Pin a Post to the Top of Your Page
Pinning a post to the top of your Facebook page is a great way to draw attention to that post and boost visibility. To pin a post simply click the arrow in the top right hand side of the post and select Pin to Top from the drop down menu. This is prime real estate on a Facebook Page so use it wisely.
Facebook Is Not A Set And Forget Marketing Tool
