The statistics are astounding with 2 billion people using Facebook each month to connect to family and friends it is not surprising to learn that they also use it to discover and learn more about businesses. It is more important than ever for small businesses to have a presence on Facebook and be where their customers are.
Having your business on social platforms like Facebook and Instagram is a game changer, one that levels the playing field between all businesses, big or small. So what that means is, if, you want to know “How to create a Facebook page for business” then this is a step by step guide to get you started.
(Before you learn how to create a Facebook page for business you will need a personal profile)
From your personal profile click on the arrow in the top right-hand corner. A menu will drop down revealing your options. Click on “Create A Page”.
Choosing A Business Category
There are a few steps to this but don’t worry there is nothing too difficult.
Choose the category that best describes your business and click “Get Started”.
Your choices are:
- Business or Brand
- Community or Public Figure
Your next step is to name your page. All this means is enter your business name.
From here you need to add a category that best describes your business. In the search bar type a few words that best describes your type of business then select from your options.
Next you will be required to fill in your business address and phone number. You have the option here to keep these details visible to your audience or you can hide them. If you would like your details hidden simply click the box underneath that says “Don’t show my address”. When you’re done click “Continue”.
Adding a profile picture and cover photos or videos
This is where the fun begins and your page really starts to come together.
Adding a Profile Picture
There are a few things you need to know before deciding on what picture to put here so I am going to lay it all out in plain English for you.
A profile picture is what represents your business on Facebook. It is the picture that displays next to your pages name around Facebook. So every comment or post you put up on Facebook your profile picture will be displayed to represent your page. My recommendation here is to use your business logo.
Facebook recommends that your profile picture be:
- 180 pixels in height and 180 pixels in width
Click “Upload a profile picture”
Note: Facebook will crop your image to fit their dimensions so using anything other than a square is pointless.
Adding a Cover Photo
Cover photos have a high level of exposure on Facebook pages so making it visually appealing to any visitors to your page should be your goal.
Take into account your business style and what it stands for. These are the things you want to try to portray through your cover photo. To show you what I mean I have included some examples.
Cover photos are also a great way to promote any campaigns, specials or deals that your business is offering at the moment.
You can upload a photo from your computer or choose an image from one of your albums on Facebook, but seems this is a tutorial on “How to create a Facebook page for business” you won’t have any albums just yet. Again there are some dimensions you have to follow so that Facebook don’t crop any parts of your image and they are 828 x 315 pixels.
Facebook also give you the option of featuring a video instead of an image for your cover. This is a great way to really get creative and show off what your business is all about. It can be as simple as a slide show showing the different services or products that your business can offer. The cover of your Facebook page is prime real estate so make the most of it.
Here are the steps to adding a cover video:
- Go to your Page.
- Click Add a Cover in the top left of your cover photo or video.
- Select Upload Photo/Video to upload a video from your computer. Cover videos should be at least 820 x 312 pixels and between 20 and 90 seconds long.
- Select the video from either your computer or your existing videos.
- After the video has uploaded, re position the video by clicking it and dragging it up or down, then click Next.
- Click the arrows to scroll through up to 10 thumbnail options for your cover video. The thumbnail image may be used when someone hovers over your Page’s name to get more context about your Page.
- Click Publish and your video will render.
Note: All videos, covers and profile pictures can be change with a click of a few buttons. They are not permanent.

More About Your Business
This section is optional but so important for SEO. Not only will it tell people about your business but it will also help people find you when they look for you online and that’s the whole point to having a social presence.
You only have a 155 character limit so add the most important information here, like your business location and what makes your business so valuable to customers.
When you have finished click “Save”.
Create a Page Username
You can add a Username by clicking “Create a Username” for your page. Make sure your username matches your business name. So what that means is, if your business is called “Bobs Bakery” your username should be “Bobs Bakery”. Now that you have a Username, it appears in custom URLs that help people find, remember and message your Page.
Add More Information
For your chance to be found more easily by the people looking for you it is in your benefit to fill in as much information about your business as possible. Things like business categories, parking information, price ranges, menus, team members and more can be added by clicking See More, then click About.
Adding a call-to-action button
Once people start visiting your page it is a good idea to give them a “Call-to-action” (CTA). Something you want them to do. Facebook supply you with a button for this that is situated at the top of your page just under your cover image. There are a few choices you can make with this and here they are:
- Book Now
- Contact Us
- Use App
- Play Game
- Shop Now
- Sign Up
- Watch Video
- Send Email

Congratulations! You now have your very own designed and written Facebook Business Page. You are well on your way to establishing an authoritive and credible on line presence but don’t stop here. Start posting content relevant to your brand and industry and be consistent with it.
